Web work

E-mail Print PDF

I've been tinkering on and off with a new web site that is aimed mostly at the people on the open mic stand-up comedy circuit in London.  I'm slowly starting to let people on to the site properly, although there's still a bit of work to be done, and not that much free time to do it in.  Once it's up and running properly, I'll almost certainly have a link from this site to it.  I'm pleased with the way it is coming together, and I think it will be a huge benefit to the open mic crowd.  I know it will be a huge benefit to me just to have the information available in such a handy format.  Even better if other people (e.g. folks who run gigs) take over the task of keeping their own stuff up to date.  Then everyone wins.  We'll see how it goes.  So far, it's looking promising, but it will be a couple of weeks before the site is ready for launch.

Blog linking

I'm trying out a way of linking my old blog to my new web site using RSS.  You should find that a menu has appeared between MAIN and MAGIC, a menu entitled QENNY'S VIRTUAL GOB.  It will show the five most recent entries from my old blog, and any time I add a new entry on that blog, the list will automagically update itself.  Clicking on any of the links opens a new window to display the blog entry, and from there, you get access to the whole thing.  Think that will do for now.

Getting there is such slow work

I did want to put in a little time on the site today, but realised that I had forgotten to send through all the necessary details.  Doh.  Also, it looks like once I have shifted across to my new hosting service I might not have access to my email at work any more, which is a shame.  It was handy to have that.

Right now, I'm going through the major hassle of migrating all my domains to the new hosting service.  I had previously used a company based in Canada, and they have served me relatively well over the years.  However, my recent experience with The Magic Circle web site encouraged me to look at alternative providers, so I jumped ship.  Or at least, I'm in the process of doing so.  It can be tricky to track down all the necessary details, though, especially since registrars can't just take it from anyone that it's okay to start pointing Domain X to IP address Y because person Z said so - person Z has to prove that they are allowed to change the details for Domain X.  And if person Z set up the domain a long time ago and can't find his original details, and doesn't even use the email address he used when he set them up ... well, then it gets tricky.
